You will rewire your brain: Going out of our comfort zone to experience an unfamiliar place fires off our neurons (which send messages in our brains) and creates new connections that didn’t exist before. Study abroad will expand your mind in ways you didn’t think possible in such a short time frame—you’ll almost instantly become more adaptable, empathetic and flexible. You’ll also experience improved mental health, returning home feeling stronger and more focused.

You will grow more independent: Most high school students have rarely been away from their families for extended periods, with many never having experienced solo air travel or going abroad alone! Studying abroad pushes you to independently navigate a new territory, far away from your parents, guardians and everything that you know, but with the help of a study abroad organization that can still provide you safety and support abroad. On a study abroad program, you’ll discover a new you, gain new interests, reflect on your life back home, and return feeling more in charge of your decisions.

You will learn a language faster: Learning a language in the classroom can only go so far. When surrounded by a language in a new place, you get to try out your skills 24/7. This can mean great, rapid language gains.

You will immerse yourself in a culture: Just the simple act of catching a plane to a foreign place is a great thing for anybody. However, there’s a big difference between merely traveling somewhere and studying abroad. When you travel, you can see major landmarks, try new food, and learn a little bit of history. On the other hand, going on a study abroad program lets you better understand the setting you’re in, connecting you with locals and giving you greater access to the authentic culture (beyond what the average traveler sees).

You will make new friends.

You will develop new skills.

You will have memories that will last a lifetime.

Some shows entertain. Some educate. And then there’s Adolescence—a show that makes you sit in silence and forces you to reflect deeply.

What the show reveals is that many of the emotional wounds young people carry don’t come from physical spaces anymore—they come from digital ones.

Online bullying that’s subtle and devastating

Cancel culture, ghosting, exclusion from “close friends” stories

Validation addiction from likes, comments, shares

A constant, exhausting performance of happiness

Adolescence makes it impossible to look away. What Adolescence screams is that mental health for teenagers is not a “phase.” It’s not something you can fix with “discipline” or “tough love.” We need to learn the world they live in. Not fear it. Not judge it. Learn it. Because until we understand the language of their pain, we’ll never be able to help them heal.

Here are some simple but powerful things every adult can do:

Learn the Lingo: Terms like “dry text,” “ghosting,” “FOMO,” “ratioed,” “main vs. close friends story,” and “burner accounts” carry emotional weight for teens. Understanding them helps you understand them.

Join the Platforms: Not to spy—but to see what’s out there. Follow youth creators, mental health advocates, and even meme pages. This isn’t about control. It’s about connection.

Create Safe Conversations: Drop the lectures. Ask questions. Listen more than you talk. Be the adult they can turn to without fear of punishment or shame.

Teach Digital Empathy: Encourage compassion online the same way we do offline. Teach them how words can hurt—and how silence can hurt more.

Model Boundaries: Show them how to take breaks, how to curate their feeds, how to step away without guilt. The algorithm feeds off insecurity—teach them to starve it.

Start by listening. Really listening. The truth is: the kids don’t need more advice. They need more understanding. More presence. More love—without conditions. And maybe, just maybe, if enough of us truly listen, we can stop losing them to silence.

Start by making our homes safe spaces, not pressure cookers. By asking, “Are you okay?” and meaning it. By dropping the constant “what will people say?” mindset and instead asking, “What are you feeling?”

Start meaningful conversations with Teens: Ask: “What’s the one app you use the most—and why?” Ask: “Is there anything online that’s been bothering you lately?” Say: “I may not get all of it, but I want to understand your world.”

Watch this show. Not just to see what teenagers are facing, but to understand how much of it goes unseen. Watch it not to criticize or fix, but to connect. Because we don’t need another generation growing up thinking pain is something you go through alone. We need to show them that behind the screens, someone is listening.

Adolescence doesn’t just demand your attention. It demands your responsibility. It’s not just the best thing on Netflix or any other platform—it might be the most important. Watch it. Talk about it. Share it. And most of all, let it change how you see the young people around you.

‘Brain rot’ is defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.

Are you spending hours scrolling mindlessly on Instagram reels and TikTok? If so, you might be suffering from brain rot, which Oxford University Press has named its phrase or word of the year of 2024.

It is a term that captures concerns about the impact of consuming excessive amounts of low-quality online content, especially on social media. The usage saw an increase of 230% in its frequency from 2023 to 2024.

When we spend hours surfing and scrolling, we consume huge quantities of meaningless data, negative news, and perfectly retouched photos of friends and celebrities that make us feel inadequate. Trying to absorb and cope with massive amounts of content creates mental fatigue. And that can lead to a drop in motivation, focus, productivity, and energy over time, especially in young people

Scrolling through social media platforms spikes the neurochemical dopamine, which produces feelings of satisfaction and pleasure. The more you do it, the more you want to do it. Your brain associates scrolling with a feeling of gratification, even when you’re aware of its negative consequences. In this way, scrolling can become a behavioral addiction.

Research has shown that the Internet can produce acute and sustained alterations in cognition related to attention and memory, which may be reflected in changes in the brain’s gray matter.

Repeated scrolling can have a negative effect on individuals’ mental faculties by disrupting the brain’s capacity to encode and retain information. As well, constant overstimulation can lead to a reduced attention span.

For example, according to a study of 1,051 young adults between 18 and 27 years old, social media addiction has a significant negative association with executive functioning skills such as planning, organization, problem-solving, decision-making, and working memory.

Preventing brain rot requires that being intentional about your media consumption. Your mental health and emotional well-being are likely to improve when you control your screen engagement. Some of the best strategies include:

set limits on screen time

pursue non-digital interests

connect offline with positive people

strengthen your mind

do a digital detox

get support

Don’t let your brain rot.

Falling into habits of overwork can result in chronic stress and burnout. The impacts of chronic workplace stress and burnout include physical symptoms like fatigue, hypertension, difficulty concentrating, irritability, changes in appetite, insomnia, headaches, and—in the long-term—an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and serious heart issues. Mental health symptoms related to chronic stress and burnout include depression, anxiety, feelings of detachment, isolation, a decline in job satisfaction, and disconnection from friends and family members.

Breaking unhealthy habits around overwork and striving to create a healthier work-life balance are goals worth working on. Here are eight steps to help break patterns of overwork:

Bring awareness to your habits around overwork: Awareness is the first step to creating positive change. Tune in to what keeps you working into the wee hours.

Realize that your resources of time and energy are finite and that habitually dedicating the lion’s share of your limited resources to your working life negatively impacts your relationships and your health.

Prioritize your workplace tasks, goals, and responsibilities: Be realistic about what you hope to, need to, and can achieve in the course of a day, a week, and within a deadline.

Ask for help when timelines, responsibilities, and commitments are unrealistic: It is important to be realistic about the time, resources, and support required to meet deadlines, achieve goals, and manage workloads. Talk with team leaders and managers when expectations are unrealistic and require more resources.

Consider taking your talents elsewhere. If you are constantly struggling with impossible deadlines and managers who are unresponsive to your input or concerns, consider seeking a healthier, more supportive working environment.

Pay attention to your reasons for overworking. Are you overworking to achieve a goal or to feel worthy and of value?

Schedule downtime: As those of us who overwork understand, what gets scheduled gets done. Start scheduling leisure activities with family, time for friends, and time to pursue activities that bring you joy.

Seek the help of a mental health professional: If you are struggling to break entrenched habits of overwork, a therapist can help you address underlying issues, explore your set and maintain healthy boundaries, and create a sustainable work-life balance.

Taking responsibility means acknowledging and accepting accountability for one’s actions, decisions, and their consequences, whether positive or negative. It involves being honest about your role in a situation and being willing to face the outcomes, both good and bad. It’s an important trait that helps build trust and respect in personal and professional relationships.

Here are some key aspects of taking responsibility:

Acknowledgment: Recognising your actions and their impact on others or the situation is the first step. Avoiding denial and owning up to your part is crucial

Accountability: Being responsible means being accountable for your choices, behaviours, and commitments. It involves being proactive in dealing with the consequences

Learning from Mistakes: When you take responsibility, you acknowledge that mistakes happen, and you are willing to learn from them. This helps in personal growth and avoiding similar errors in the future

Integrity: Taking responsibility shows integrity and builds trust among others. People are more likely to respect and trust someone who takes ownership of their actions

Problem-Solving: Instead of blaming others or external factors, taking responsibility involves finding solutions to rectify the situation or prevent future issues

Communication: Openly communicating about your actions and accepting responsibility shows maturity and leadership qualities

Empathy: Understanding the impact of your actions on others and expressing genuine remorse, when necessary, demonstrates empathy and compassion

Taking responsibility doesn’t mean that you should feel guilty or beat yourself up over mistakes. It’s about being accountable, learning, and striving to do better in the future. This attitude fosters personal development and positive relationships with others.

Operations at Salgado Filho International Airport in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, one of the country’s busiest, resumed on October 21st after unprecedented floods in the region disrupted flights in May.

The airport, operated by Fraport had its runways and corridors submerged in water as heavy rains battered Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state of which Porto Alegre is the capital, killing more than 180 people.

Flights to and from Salgado Filho had been temporarily suspended due to the damages to the runway and terminals. The government allowed carriers to operate at the nearby Canoas Air Force Base, but at reduced rates as the base did not have adequate infrastructure.

The government said Salgado Filho’s operations will resume from Oct. 21, initially with 128 daily flights. Airlines were cleared to sell tickets for flights to and from Porto Alegre starting Friday.

Hope for better days.

According to historical records, a major sporting event was recorded as early as 776 BC in the ancient Greek city of Olympia, which is where the current games’ name comes from. The competitions were an integral part of the Hellenic culture of the time, taking on an important religious and cultural significance as the contests were related to honouring the god Zeus. At first, they only included events like foot races and a pentathlon divided into a foot race, long jump, discus throw, javelin throw and wrestling, and athletes usually competed naked.

One of the main emblems of the sporting event and a symbol of peace, the Olympic rings represent the union of the five continents (Oceania, Africa, America, Asia and Europe) through the representation of five different coloured rings intertwined. The design was conceived by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the Olympic movement, who decided to use those colours (blue, yellow, black, green and red) because every nation has at least one of them on its flag.

The Olympic flag, which consists of the five rings on a white background, came into being at the 1914 World Congress in Paris, but it was not until the 1920 event in Antwerp, Belgium, that it was officially hoisted for the first time. Since then, it has been at every Olympic celebration.

Along with the Olympic rings, the torch is one of the Olympics’ main symbols. It all starts months before the big event at the Temple of Hera in the archaeological remains of Olympia. In a ceremony symbolising the connection between the ancient and the modern, an Olympic flame is lit and the torch is carried past thousands of people to the host city for the lighting of the Olympic cauldron on the opening day.

According to protocol, the flame must continue to burn for the duration of the event until the day of the closing ceremony, when it is put out for the Olympic period to be considered officially over.

Athletes at the 1906 St. Louis games were the first to receive gold, silver and bronze medals for first, second and third place. Before that, gold medals were not produced for the competition as it was an expensive material, so the event organisers opted for a different metal: in Athens 1896 the first-placed athletes received a silver medal, an olive branch and a diploma, while the second-placed athletes received a copper medal, a laurel branch and a diploma.

The presence of female athletes in Olympic competitions has always been very uneven, but important achievements are being made in many respects. 2012 London, for example, marked a turning point in history as it was the first in which all countries had at least one female athlete on their teams.

Twelve years later, another milestone in terms of Olympic equality has been reached: Paris 2024 will be the first event with full gender parity, with the same number of spots for both women and men. This is further proof that opportunities for women in sport continue to grow.
